Best Days & Times for Villain Hitting
Published: October 23, 2026
You can hit a villain on any of the 365 days of the year — but folklore insists some moments are simply better. Here is every traditional rule on days, hours and places, so you can pick your moment and swing with confidence.
The peak day: Jingzhe (Awakening of Insects)
Jingzhe — March 5 or 6 on the Western calendar — is the main event, the busiest villain-hitting day of the year. The spring thunder wakes hibernating snakes and insects, and farmers once beat the ground to drive pests away from the new crop. Folklore adds that on Jingzhe the White Tiger — fierce god of gossip and quarrels — goes hunting, and feeding it paper tigers and pork keeps its mouth shut for the year. Villain hitting split off from exactly this rite, which is why Goose Neck Bridge sees its longest queues on the day, with grannies beating hundreds of effigies and prices nudging up from the usual HK$50. The next Jingzhe falls on March 5, 2027 — full details in our Villain Hitting 2027 guide.
Monthly good days: the 6th, 16th and 26th
Missed Jingzhe? No need to wait a year. Folklore holds that the 6th, 16th and 26th of every lunar month are suitable days — six is a yin number, fitting for driving off yin-natured nuisances. For extra precision, check the Chinese almanac (Tong Sing) for a "Removal Day" (除日) — a day earmarked for removing things, petty people included.
| Day | Why | Heat |
|---|---|---|
| Jingzhe (Mar 5–6) | White Tiger's day; origin of the whole custom | ★★★ Peak of the year |
| Lunar 6th, 16th, 26th | "Six" is a yin number — right for dispelling villains | ★★ Three times a month |
| Almanac "Removal Day" | A day for removing — troubles included | ★★ |
| Any other day | The ritual runs all year; sincerity beats timing | ★ |
The hour: aim for noon, finish before sunset
Most folklore sources agree that the noon hour (11am–1pm), when yang energy peaks, is the best time — and that the rite should not be performed after sunset, as yin energy rises and the whole point is to use yang to suppress yin. A claim circulating online that "7pm is best" contradicts the mainstream view and traces to individual fortune-tellers; take it with a grain of salt. Simple rule: beat by day, done before dark.
Location: heavy-sha ground fights fire with fire
Traditionally villain hitting happens on shadowy, energetically heavy ground: three-way junctions, under flyovers, roadsides, hillsides, beside guardian stones or Earth God shrines. Goose Neck Bridge became the holy land precisely because its underside faces a three-way junction — a "three-sha" position whose heavy energy suppresses petty people; more in the Goose Neck Bridge history. One iron rule: never perform villain hitting at home or in the office — "inviting the gods is easy, sending them off is not", and you do not want the rite's targets wandering into your living room. Which is one quiet advantage of villain hitting online: the ceremony happens in the cloud, and your home's feng shui stays untouched.
What to avoid
- Days that clash with your own zodiac sign or birth chart — check the almanac before picking a date.
- Pregnant women, both ways: never target one, and folklore advises expecting mothers not to take part or even watch.
- Some schools advise against participation while in mourning or in frail health — individual masters' opinions rather than universal rules; believe them or not, as you see fit.
